Benchmarking Safety Performance Report 2009

"One LTI per Minute in Australia"

It was expected that the global economic crisis may have caused deterioration of safety performance, particularly if organisations withdrew funding from safety initiatives including training.  However, the results of the Safety Action annual Benchmarking Safety Performance survey 2009, suggests most employers have maintained their safety systems reasonably well in these tough economic times.

The key lag (loss) indicators used in the survey were;
- Lost Time Injury Rate (LTI Rate)
- Medical Time Injury Rate (MTI Rate)
- Days Lost / 100 employees / year
- Number of Safety & Workers Compensation personnel / 100 employees
- Workers Compensation Premium / employee / year

For the first time this year we also included some positive (lead) indicators for safety performance:
- Safety inspections conducted to schedule (as a percentage)
- Hazards fixed within 60 days (as a percentage)
- Safety Climate Survey positive reponses (as a percentage)
