Orica’s recently reported success in eliminating fatalities, after having at least one per year for recent years. They attributed the improvement to making their management systems easier for workers to use. The system focused on the major risks, much like the famous Toyota “Safe 6” model.
Orica’s new system targeted 20 key major hazard categories that included mobile equipment and transport. The projects function was to identify the major fatality risks and ensure standardised fit-for-purpose solutions, ensure training of operational staff in legal obligations, system overhaul to ensure easy to use – with a focus on ease of reporting of incidents, obtain information and clarity, as well as building a culture of care for the community.
Overall success of the program is attributed by Orica to the strong management support, from board, each director and line managers.
