Several parts of the Australian Standard on Machinery Safeguarding have been updated. Whilst the technical information largely remains unchanged, one part is completely new - Part 1503: Safety-related parts of control systems - General principles for design.
In Australia, we currently design safety systems (e.g. machine interlocks) to “Categories”, per AS 4024.1501. The revised part 1503, incorporates “Performance Levels” (PLs), which requires a determination of the probability of dangerous failure for each individual component. There will be an extensive transition period to allow industry to adapt to the new probabilistic approach.
