According to the Aviation Safety Network, an independent Dutch organisation, 2014 was the safety year ever for commercial aviation, despite the two high profile Malaysian Airline tragedies.
There were only twenty one (21) accidents involving fatalities in 2014. However, with a total of 990 people killed (many from MH 370 and MH 17), 2014 was only 24th best year for number of people killed.
Africa remains the most dangerous place to fly with 43% of all fatal accidents world-wide, but only having 3% of the traffic.
You can pick the safety measure you prefer, but in any event commercial air travel remains the safest way to travel.
