Hearing Awareness Week

01/08/2017

National Hearing Awareness Week is coming soon (August 20-26th 2017).

The latest way to look at hearing conservation programs is not just focusing on sound levels and wearing PPE!

To provide a hearing conservation program that is effective, there are seven key elements:

1. Measure the noise level (with calibrated sound level meter);

2. Control noise at the source;

3. Protect people with hearing protectors if noise cannot be reduced <85dBA Av.;

4. Train: educate employees on the effects of exposure to loud noise and train them to properly use hearing protection eg 3M Noise Indicator for increased awareness;

5. Check hearing protection is effective eg fitted correctly and right type (See below details about 3M E-A-R fit Validation System);

6. Records: Keep confidential, accurate and up-to-date records of noise surveys, actions taken, instrument calibrations, audiometric tests, attenuation ratings and training.

7. Evaluate with period employee audiometric tests and sound level survey.

Check the fit with 3M E-A-R fit Validation System

If earplugs are not fitted correctly or if they are not the correct type for the user’s ear canal shape and size, they will not provide the expected protection.

3M E-A-R fit Dual-Ear Validation System is one of the only systems in the world that allows quantitative assessment of a workers Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) for earplugs and ear muffs.  The test immediately determines if the hearing protection is effective and correctly fitted.

Safety Action can conduct hearing protection fit testing for your workers or provide details of a 3M E-A-Rfit Validation System for your workplace.
