A supervisor has been sentenced to four months jail in Edmonton, Canada, following a trench collapse that killed a worker.

The court found the supervisor and the company negligent, as the trench was not braced in any way and collapsed burying the worker. The Judge noted they were also lacking remorse for the tragic accident.

The company, Sahib Contracting, was fined nearly $500,000.

WorkSafe Victoria have a Australia have a Code of Practice on Safety Precautions in Trenching Operations and Safe Work Australia have WHS Codes on Excavations. These should be consulted for any trenching operations, particularly where the excavation is more than 1.5m deep, as this is High Risk Construction Work.
