Electric Vehicle Bans

A large US shipping company, Matson, has banned the transport of electric vehicles from its ships, effective immediately. The ban includes full electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. 

We understand the ban has been introduced following a number of serious fires at sea that has been attributed to electric vehicle cargo. Some transport ships have been totally destroyed or sunk.

Apartment Owners Ban Electric Vehicle Charging

On a similar topic, numerous Owners Corporations around the country for residential apartments blocks have banned, or planning to introduce bans on electric vehicle charging in underground car parks, because of the fire risk.

Specialists advise the risk of fires occurring with electric vehicles is substantially lower than for traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. However, what is also clear is that the consequences of electric vehicle fires can be far more devastating and more difficult for fire authorities to extinguish, typically taking three times more water to suppress.

It has been said the only way to ensure a damaged electric battery from a vehicle doesn’t re-ignite is to submerge it in a swimming pool.
