Safety Vision vs Safety Plan
A reader has asked what is the difference between a safety vision and safety plan. Whilst there can be some company terminology dictating the answer, most people accept the following as the definition.
Safety Vision
A safety vision is an aspirational statement about a desired future positive condition eg no work injuries or everyone goes home safe.
These statements are intended to be motivational and guide workers behaviour accordingly. Because visions are aspirational the solutions on how to achieve the desired outcomes may not be fully known at the start of the journey. Milestones are often used to show the stages of development or progress.
Safety Plan
A safety plan is a detailed approved and budgeted document that maps out activities, timing, responsibilities, with clear performance targets eg KPIs.
Because of the level of detail and approval process it is often referred to as a safety business plan eg similar to all other business plans.
The activities on the safety business plan are not aspirational, to be delivered if the safety team find the time, but are a firm commitment for the prescribed deliverables. Performance is often monitored at executive level.
