Staying Safe This Christmas
Work and Home Safety Tips
As we head into the festive season, excitement is building for celebrations, family time, and a well-earned break. But it’s also the time of year when accidents, fatigue, and other safety issues arise, both at work and at home.
Before we wrap up for the year, take a moment to think about how to stay safe and look out for each other during the holidays. Here are some practical tips to help ensure everyone enjoys a happy and safe Christmas.
Staying Safe at Work During the Busy Season
The lead-up to Christmas can be hectic, with deadlines to meet, end-of-year functions, and people eager to complete tasks. This is when people take short cuts and mistakes creep in.
Keep safety front of mind:
Don’t rush through tasks - take time to do them correctly, especially when using tools, machinery, or electrical equipment.
Follow safety procedures as usual, even if you’re short on time.
If you notice a hazard, stop and report it immediately. Fix it if possible.
End-of-year clean-up:
Before heading off on leave, make sure work areas are tidy and clear. Switch off electrical equipment, dispose of waste properly, ensure chemicals or flammable liquids are in correct “DG” store.
Fire Safety at Home
Christmas decorations and candles add sparkle and warmth, but they can also cause fires.
If using a real tree, keep it well-watered and away from heaters, fireplaces, and candles.
Inspect lights before use and only use lights “rated for outdoors” outside - replace any damaged cords.
Turn off Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
Take extra care when cooking festive meals. Keep flammable items away from stoves, and never leave food cooking unattended.
Travel and Road Safety
The holidays mean more cars on the road, longer trips, and sometimes a bit of fatigue. Stay alert and plan ahead to minimise risk of accidents.
Before setting off:
Check your car’s tyres, oil, water and brakes.
Allow plenty of travel time to avoid rushing.
Take regular breaks eg every two hours on long drives.
Stay focused and Don’t Drink and Drive
Avoid distractions while driving, such as texting or checking maps.
If you enjoy a few drinks at Christmas functions, organise a designated driver.
Health and Wellbeing
The end of the year can also be stressful and tiring for some. Fitting in work and family events, and holiday plans can leave anyone feeling run-down.
Take care of yourself
Get enough rest - fatigue can affect patience, concentration and safety.
Stay hydrated, especially during hot weather.
Take time to relax and recharge before returning to work.
Check in on others
The festive season isn’t easy for everyone. If a colleague, neighbour, or friend seems withdrawn or struggling, a simple conversation can make a big difference.
Online Shopping Safety
Online shopping is convenient, but it’s also prime time for scammers.
When buying gifts online:
Only use secure websites eg look for the padlock symbol in your browser.
Avoid clicking links in emails or social media ads. Go directly to the retailer’s website.
Use strong, unique passwords and avoid entering payment details on public Wi-Fi.
Be alert to delivery scams - if you receive a text claiming to be from a courier asking for payment or login details, report it then delete immediately.
Emergency Preparedness
Even with the best intentions, emergencies can still happen. Make sure you and your family are prepared.
Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit and know where to find after-hours medical help.
Store important phone numbers, including local emergency services, somewhere easy to find.
Refresh your knowledge of basic first aid, especially if you’re hosting gatherings or travelling to remote areas.
If you live or are holidaying in a bushfire-prone area, stay alert to local fire warnings, have a clear evacuation plan, and know your nearest safe meeting points.
Have a “water safety plan” if near water.
