New Hazardous Chemicals Exposure Limits

Australia is transitioning to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for airborne contaminants. Previously called Workplace Exposure Standards (WES), the term WEL aligns with international terminology.

From December 1, 2026, business must comply with new limits and prevent exposure to airborne contaminants exceeding the WEL.

Exposure limits for some substances under the new WEL list are significantly lower than previous limits. Safe Work Australia have published guidance materials to explain the new requirements and an online airborne contaminants hub to help employers understand their WHS duties.
