Stockpiling of Fuel Sparks Safety Concerns

Several safety authorities are reminding the safety requirements for the transport, storage and handling of petrol following recent panic buying.

Petrol is regulated as a dangerous good (DG) and is highly flammable. Stockpiling fuel can create a risk of; fires, explosions, serious injury, death, and significant property damage.

To reduce these risks, the following controls apply:

  1. Petrol must only be stored, handled and transported in approved containers. Refer to label on container.

  2. Transporting more than 1,000 litres triggers DG transport requirements such as placarding, documentation and fire extinguishers.

  3. Storage requirements depend on the volume held. Storing more than 250 litres requires placarding, minimum separation distances from residences, and appropriate fire extinguishers. Quantities over 2,500 litres require notification to authorities, emergency plans, and increased firefighting equipment etc.
